PRIDE: K2C’s Innovative Leadership Programme – From the Youth, For the Youth

By: Vusi Tshabalala

The K2C PRIDE is a leadership group comprising of young Environmental Monitors (EMs), enabled by the Department of Environmental Affairs, which shows leadership potential amongst their peers and colleagues. It is a platform where the young leaders come to sharpen one another and prepare for leadership positions in the future. The name K2C PRIDE is an acronym for “Kruger to Canyons Progressive Resilient Initiative Driven Empowered” which was created by the EMs themselves with the support of the K2C managers.

The K2C Biosphere Region is 2 474 700 million hectares stretching between Limpopo and Mpumalanga Province. This beautiful green landscape is made up of water streams flowing from the escarpments running down through to agricultural farms, communities and reserves. All the natural resources are shared by both man and animal for survival. One of the major roles of the biosphere is to connect people with their natural resources and promote sustainable use. It also has four objectives which one of them is to “Enable a Network of empowered EMs to assist in conservation awareness and training within local communities.”

In the past the K2C created a platform where one EM from the different organisations in the landscape would come together once a month for a youth leadership peer education network called Maeba – meaning dove.  The purpose of this was to equip EMs with potable relevant environmental and citizen knowledge and skills to contribute to their well-being and employability in ten monthly lessons through topics such as diversity management, conflict management, environmental education techniques and more. As the group grows and develops the K2C PRIDE was born, where the focus is primarily leadership development. For the year 2020 a learning framework has been developed to stretch, challenge and push the PRIDE group through their limits to bring out the best in them with assessments at the end of each lesson and homework. The first lesson looked at knowing yourself, definition and character of a leader and if you were brand how would you market the leader in you.
