FINALE SCHOOLS PLAY AREAS

by Shoki Mafogo

On the 5th of July 2019, Hoedspruit Hub, Woodhouse College and Kruger to Canyons Biosphere officially handed over newly constructed play areas to Maatla Primary and Sekoko Primary schools in Finale village, Ga-Mametja.

The Woodhouse College is based in the UK, and this group of students and their teachers came to our landscape not only to explore the Lowveld, but to leave a legacy in our community through this school support project. The students were selected through a motivational process on why they wanted to be part of this project, and raised funds for the trip to SA themselves.

This project was a week of hard work, partnerships with the broad community and also a learning experience for every individual involved. The receiving school’s principals were  ecstatic with this project as the schools had no area designated for foundational phase learning before. “These play areas will not only be physically contributing to the children’s fitness, but will be stimulating them mentally. Some activities require being outdoor but we never participated as we did not have the infrastructure. This is truly a great intervention for us” said one of the grade R teachers.

The K2C Environmental Monitors, a K2C Programme funded by DEFF, played a big role in facilitating and assisting the process for the week, from pushing cement on a wheelbarrow to interpretation roles between our guests and the Finale community. A big thank you to our partner Hoedspruit Hub, for linking us together with the Woodhouse College, creating a global network and also enhancing our school support mandate.
