SOUTH AFRICAN YOUTH IN BIODIVERSITY

by Vusi Tshabalala

In South Africa, June is recognized as the month where youth are celebrated through commemorating the School Uprising of June 16, 1976, which changed the course of South African history.

The K2C participated in and assisted with the facilitation of a one-week capacity building workshop hosted by the Department of Environmental Affairs in Johannesburg.

The Workshop was led by Ms Malta Qwathekana, who is South Africa's national focal point for the Convention on Biological Diversity. The event was attended by 120 young people from all 9 provinces in our country. They were from organizations such as People and Parks Youth forum, Global Youth Biodiversity Network and the South African chapter called the South African Youth Biodiversity network, SANParks People and Conservation unit as well as the the Rhino Ambassadors from Limpopo to discuss ways they can prevent the loss of biodiversity and how they can contribute in the Post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

The participants were exposed to:  The international Convention on Biological Diversity, the National Biodiversity Strategy, the Global Youth Biodiversity Network and other biodiversity conservation concepts and tools. The Meeting also offered some career guidance.
